Butch Cassidy's

~ Hole-In-The-Wall Ride ~

Wyoming Territory

June 12 - 17, 2011

Five Star Rating for Adventure by True West magazine

Some called it the "Outlaw Trail."  The trail itself ran from Canada to Mexico.  It was a lawless time and a lawless era, where any man good enough with a six-gun and fast horse could dodge the lawdogs.

Located in Johnson County, Wyoming, just west of Kaycee, the "Wall" encloses a fertile valley where desperados fattened stolen herds of cattle and horses, to be rebranded for illegal sale.

The "Hole" is a narrow, steep, V-shaped trail - a niche in the massive red sandstone-walled cliffs.  This was the only access into the valley from the east - from the cattle ranges of the Powder River country - virtually impossible to detect - a perfect hideaway for an outlaw headquarters.

Frank and Jesse James reportedly were among the first to hide here.  The violent Harvey "Kid Curry" Logan and his brothers, plus Tom Oday, George "Flat Nose" Curry, and Big Nose George used the area extensively.  When Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch, organized in 1896, joined the Hole-in-the-Wall gang at the turn of the century, the area became one of the foremost strongholds along the trail - efficient and elusive.

The famous "super" posse, led by U. S. Marshal Joe Lefors, tracked Cassidy's men here, but couldn't penetrate the hideout.

But we will!!

~ Summary ~

This historic ride is ideal for all levels of riding ability.  Bring your hoglegs ... there may still be desperate men in these parts.  You either wear the badge to bring'em in, or take a chance of being found on the wrong side of frontier justice ... you decide!

This is also near where the Johnson County War took place.  All-in-all, the area is full of history.

Our experience at the Willow Creek Ranch is unmatched by great home-cooked meals and wonderful hospitability.  The owners, Kristen and Barry, and their children, are the epitome of the hard-working, Western, God-loving family.  This is a 57,000 acre working cattle ranch. Prepare to enter into the 19th Century, yet with 21st Century luxuries.  The main bunkhouse was built before Butch was a Wild Bunch member.  He reportedly drank coffee in the very house we'll have some of our meals.

Please note:  Both men and women are invited to join on this historic ride (I get that question a lot!)

Sunday, June 12th

Arrive in Casper, Wyoming (if flying)

  •  Arrangements for transportation to Willow Creek Ranch - coordinate with Steve Shaw

  •  6:00 PM - Meet & Greet - Dinner at Willow Creek Ranch Bunkhouse

  •  Overnight at Willow Creek Ranch Bunkhouse

Monday - Friday, June 13th - 17th

  •  For five days we'll ride Hole-in-the-Wall Valley and this vast area of red canyons, arroyos, and creeks that was once inhabited by some of the most dangerous man-killers in Old West history.  Here we'll learn why they call it Hole-in-the-Wall while visiting old Wild Bunch campsites, riding beautiful Buffalo Creek Canyon, and much more.

  •  This is rough, rugged cowboy country, the likes of which you have never seen.  Bring your camera and enthusiasm!

** This five-day ride allows the flexibility to either camping out ~ or ~ return each evening to the bunkhouse

Price includes either camping out or staying in the cozy bunkhouse or any combination

Camping out - an option - but highly recommended, if for only for a night or two!!

  •   There are several different campsites to enjoy.  My favorites are near Buffalo Creek and the other near "the Hole"

  •   A chuckwagon will serve us dinner and the next day's breakfast (sack lunch for the ride)

  •   All camping gear provided ... suggest bringing your own sleeping bag ... but not necessary

  •   The tents are set up for us.  We do no setting up or tearing down of tents or equipment ... we just ride and eat!!  Talk about a "cowboy safari."  Heck, if you want your horse saddled every morning, the wranglers will do that too.  You ask and they deliver.

Staying at the Bunkhouse - another option!!

  •   Most folks like the idea of camping under the stars or in tents ... until the time comes, then they head back to the local motel or bunkhouse!!  Count me in most times as well.  Though I do enjoy camping here.

  •   Those wanting to head back each evening to the bunkhouse can do so after dinner. Nothing beats a soft bed and warm shower!  Each morning we'll get breakfast and head back to the horses for another adventure ...

  •    Weather will dictate some of our choices.
