Why are there no albino horses?
With horses the white coat is not caused by a recessive gene and white horses do not breed true as an albino would, so true albinism among horses is non existent. Therefore, with horses there is neither a recessive albino nor a dominant white gene that creates white coats in horses.
How rare is a true white horse?
True white is a very difficult colour to achieve – statistically there is only a 50% chance of producing living white offspring from any given mating due to the unusual characteristic of the white ‘W’ gene. Although a dominant gene, if both parents carry it (WW) the foal will die in the womb.
