What is the common ancestor of horses?
The horse’s ancestor is thought to have been a primitive creature about the size of a fox which emerged sometime after the time of the dinosaurs. Called Eohippus, this diminutive animal had four toes, and lived in the dense jungles that then covered much of North America.
Donkeys and horses are closely related, which explains their remarkably similar appearances. Donkeys are smaller than horses but have very similar body shapes, and both have four single-hooved feet. Dogs are more closely related to their canine ancestors, such as wolves and foxes. And due to their pronounced differences, it’s not easy for researchers to estimate who their common ancestor was.
