Horses, humans, and all other mammals share a common ancestor–with five toes. So how did horses end up with single-toed hooves? Over millions of years, many horse species lost most of their side toes. The middle toe evolved into a single large hoof, while the other toes became smaller and ultimately functionless.
Predating this coexistence, humans and horses share an evolutionary history that has implications for the health of both species. Like other mammals, the two species share much of the same DNA. Moreover, horses suffer from more than 90 hereditary diseases that show similarities to those in humans.
It is nearly identical to human chromosome 20 and part of mouse chromosome 2. These three regions not only share most of the same genes, but the genes also appear in the same order among all three species. The X chromosome is also almost identical in terms of the order of genes between horses and human.

The horse’s ancestor is thought to have been a primitive creature about the size of a fox which emerged sometime after the time of the dinosaurs. Called Eohippus, this diminutive animal had four toes, and lived in the dense jungles that then covered much of North America.
Evidence from fossils, proteins and genetic studies indicates that humans and chimpanzees had a common ancestor millions of years ago. Most scientists believe that the ‘human’ family tree (known as the sub-group hominin) split from the chimpanzees and other apes about five to seven million years ago.
