When did Moria fall to the Balrog?
In January of 3019, the Fellowship of the Ring travelled through Moria on the way to Mount Doom, reaching the Bridge of Khazad-dûm in 15 January. There they encountered the terrible creature: the Elf Legolas instantly recognized it was a Balrog, while Gimli dropped his axe in awe, recognizing Durin’s Bane.
How did Moria fall?
The Dwarves dug too deep, greedy for mithril, and disturbed a demon of great power: a Balrog, which destroyed their kingdom. By the end of the Third Age, Moria had long been abandoned by the Dwarves, and was a place of evil repute.
Why didn’t Gimli know Moria was destroyed?
There are a few reasons why Gimli would have been unaware of Balin’s fate: a messenger could have been killed by orcs on the way to spread the news, or they could have been trapped within the mines for some time before they were killed.

How many balrogs are there in Third Age?
Only one Balrog appears after the defeating of Morgoth: In the Third Age the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm unwittingly released the Balrog, afterwards known as Durin’s Bane, while mining for mithril and were driven out of Moria by the creature.
