For those of you wondering what the i.m. and 1/4/7 means after the word Adequan: The i.m. stands for intramuscular and is how the drug is administered to the horse, as an intramuscular injection in the neck.
How do you administer Adequan injections?
Administer twice weekly for up to 4 weeks (maximum of 8 injections) at approved dosage of 2 mg/lb body weight (0.02 mL/lb or 1 mL/50 lb) by intramuscular (IM) injection only. Do not exceed the recommended dose or therapeutic regimen. Do not mix Adequan® Canine with other drugs or solvents.
Does Adequan have to be injected into the muscle?
Adequan is given as an injection either in the muscle or under the skin (subcutaneously). The dose is tapered down from twice weekly initially, to once monthly.

Can Adequan be used long term?

When doses of approximately 7x the recommended dose were used, normal dogs developed enlarged kidneys. Because of this, caution is recommended when using this product in patients with kidney disease.

Stall rest ONLY for 24 hours after injection. After 24 hours, turnout is permitted. We recommend not exercising/ riding the horse on the day of treatment as well as one day following treatment (i.e. a total of two days).
What are the side effects of Adequan?
Adverse reactions in clinical studies (transient pain at injection site, transient diarrhea, and abnormal bleeding) were mild and self-limiting. In post approval experience, death has been reported in some cases; vomiting, anorexia, depression/lethargy and diarrhea have also been reported.
Can you give Adequan weekly?
I believe all respondents recommended the use of Adequan in treating arthritis (including some human uses), some very enthusiastically. Depending on the dog’s activity level and the severity of its injury/arthritis the frequency of subsequent injections runs from as often as once a week to twice a year.
